Taken · damagedfrom Yorktown and Lexington aircraft

Taken · sunkfrom USS Cavalla
Cavalla torpedoed Shokaku on the morning of 19 June 1944. Gasoline vapor from the ruptured tanks finished the carrier.
Taken · damagedfrom Hornet dive bombers of Bombing Squadron 8 and Scouting Squadron 8
About 1030 the Hornet's dive bombers, 11 of the 15 that started, dived on Shokaku through Zeros and antiaircraft fire. ONI credits at least four 1,000-pound hits and says Widhelm reported six. The Shokaku history says four and possibly six hit, the flight deck was buckled, more than fifty gunners and about 80 aircraft handlers were killed, and she kept 30 knots. The USSBS table says her maximum speed fell to 21 knots.
