Cockatoo (AMc-8) was a coastal minesweeper. The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships entry is one sentence long and gives no dimensions. NavSource calls her a coastal minesweeper built in 1936 as the fishing boat Vashon by the Seattle Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company of Seattle, acquired by the Navy on 18 October 1940. A Wikipedia article that says it incorporates the DANFS text names the builder as the Seattle Construction and Dry Dock Company and dates the acquisition 23 October 1940. DANFS itself names neither the builder nor the day she was bought. NavSource prints a specification line of 185 tons, 88 feet, a beam of 23 feet 4 inches, a draft of 8 feet 11 inches, 9 knots, a complement of 17, and one .50-caliber machine gun, and a second set of 1948 figures for the fishing boat she later became. Those figures are NavSource's.
DANFS says the first Cockatoo was placed in service on 25 April 1941 and operated in the Fourteenth Naval District from Pearl Harbor throughout the war. NavSource uses the word commissioned for that same day. She is on the Navy's list of ships present on 7 December 1941. The DANFS entry does not say where she lay that morning, what guns she had manned, or whether she was hit. The Wikipedia article adds that she was undamaged. That word is not in the DANFS sentence.
DANFS says she was transferred to the Maritime Commission on 23 September 1946. NavSource strikes her from the Naval Register on 8 May 1946, repeats the 23 September transfer, and says that in 1948 she was registered to Andrew Vidovich of San Pedro, California, as the fishing boat Vashon, and that she foundered on 23 July 1949 about three miles west of Catalina Island. Neither DANFS nor the NavSource lines that were saved name a commanding officer or an officer in charge. None is entered here.
A note on sources. The service dates that can be checked against the Navy history are the DANFS sentence: placed in service on 25 April 1941, Fourteenth Naval District duty from Pearl Harbor through the war, Maritime Commission on 23 September 1946. The builder, the acquisition day, the word commissioned, the 8 May 1946 strike, the specifications, and the 1949 foundering are NavSource, and the acquisition day there does not match the Wikipedia article. No action report for 7 December was on the Navy's ships-present page. No photograph was identified as this ship.
