Photos and infoKagero-class destroyer. At Midway she was the trailing destroyer. She stopped to hunt Nautilus, then steamed hard to rejoin the carriers. That wake led the American dive bombers in. The same day her crew took Ensign Wesley Osmus out of the water. He was a Yorktown torpedo-plane pilot. After he was questioned, he was put over the side. He caught a railing, and a crewman struck him in the head with a fire axe. Two other captured flyers that day, O'Flaherty and Gaido from Enterprise, were taken by Makigumo, not by Arashi. On 1 August 1943 she led the transport destroyers into Vila, with Hagikaze. Amagiri and Shigure were the cover, and Amagiri cut PT-109 in two. Arashi was sunk at Vella Gulf five nights later.
