- HMCS Uganda (66) Captain from 19 September 1942
William Gerrard Andrewes commanded Uganda from 19 September 1942. Uboat.net ends that command in early 1944 and gives no day. He commissioned her, took her to the Mediterranean, and was her captain when a glider bomb hit her off Salerno on 13 September 1943.
Uboat.net gives his birth as 3 November 1899 and his death as 24 November 1974. It gives no place for either, and it says it has no career note beyond the ranks, the decorations, and two commands.
Uboat.net's rank line is midshipman on 30 June 1915, acting sub-lieutenant on 15 September 1917, sub-lieutenant on 15 May 1918, lieutenant on 15 October 1919, lieutenant-commander on 15 October 1927, commander on 31 December 1932, and captain on 30 June 1938. He was mentioned in despatches on 21 December 1943, awarded the Distinguished Service Order on 23 May 1944, and made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire on 1 January 1945.
His first wartime command on uboat.net is the repair ship Albatross, from 23 August 1939 to 20 February 1940. He was appointed to Uganda on 19 September 1942, before she was finished. He commissioned her for trials at Newcastle on 17 December 1942. On 3 January 1943 she was accepted from Vickers-Armstrong. He worked her up at Scapa Flow, took her on Atlantic escort, including Queen Mary on 5 May 1943, and then to the Mediterranean. On 3 July he embarked Admiral Cunningham at Algiers for Malta. He had her for the Sicily landings, the bombardment of Augusta, and Salerno. On 9 September she was slightly damaged in a collision with Delhi. On 13 September an FX 1400 glider bomb hit her while she was firing in support of the troops. She was towed to Malta and, in December, began repairs at Charleston. Uboat.net does not say which day in early 1944 Commander Duncan Lachlan Johnston relieved him.
Uboat.net promotes him rear-admiral on 8 January 1948, vice-admiral on 1 December 1950, and admiral on 24 November 1954, and dates his retirement to 10 January 1957. It dates a Companion of the Bath to 9 June 1949 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire to 2 February 1951. The page does not say what appointments those ranks covered. He died on 24 November 1974.
