Sakura Maru was a Japanese transport of about 7,167 tons that took part in the landing of the Western Java invasion force at Bantam Bay. This account rests on the Battle of Sunda Strait article and on the movement record at combinedfleet.com. Her builder and launch date are not given in the sources found, and no photograph of her was found.
On the night of 28 February 1942, while the transports were unloading troops of the 2nd Infantry Division at Merak, the cruisers Houston and Perth sailed into the anchorage by chance. Torpedoes fired by the Japanese cruisers at the Allied ships ran on into the anchorage. Wikipedia says a spread from Mogami sank the minesweeper W-2 and the transports Sakura Maru and Tatsuno Maru, the depot ship Shinshu Maru and the hospital ship Horai Maru. Combinedfleet.com says the torpedoes fired by Mogami about 1:35 on 1 March sank W-2 and sank or disabled Sakura Maru, Horai Maru and Shinshu Maru, and that Tatsuno Maru ran aground while avoiding a torpedo. The accounts disagree on the details for Tatsuno Maru and on whether Sakura Maru was sunk or only disabled.
She settled in the shallows of Bantam Bay. The sources read say nothing more of her.
