Tenryu was a Tenryu-class light cruiser of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Captain Mitsutaro Goto took command on 28 August 1941 and was still her captain at Wake Island. On 5 June 1942 he was relieved by Captain Shinpei Asano.
On 11 December 1941, in the Battle of Wake Island, Wildcats of VMF-211 strafed Tenryu and damaged three torpedoes on her deck. The strafing is not pinned to one pilot. She remained afloat.
Asano had the ship at the Battle of Savo Island on 9 August 1942. In Mikawa's column, Tenryu and Yubari took a westward course against the northern cruisers.
She was still afloat when that night ended. Asano stayed in command until 5 December 1942, when Captain Mitsuharu Ueda relieved him. Ueda's time in command was short. On 18 December 1942, Albacore (SS-218) sank Tenryu off Madang.
