The ship
USS LST-460 was a tank landing ship. She was laid down on 26 September 1942 at Vancouver, Washington, by Kaiser, Inc., launched on 31 October 1942, and commissioned on 15 February 1943. Lieutenant Everett E. Weire had her. DANFS names him at the commissioning and does not say USNR or USN. The commissioning line on NavSource says USNR. The command table there prints Everett Emmitt Weire, USN, through 21 March 1944. Neither account says he was killed.
NavSource's command table then names a second officer, H. H. Robinson Jr., USNR, from 21 March 1944 through 21 December 1944, and marks him killed that day. The awards line on the same page prints H. E. Robinson Jr. DANFS does not name him and does not say the commanding officer was killed.
DANFS gives her the consolidation of the southern Solomons in June 1943, the Vella Lavella occupation in August 1943, the Treasury Island landing in November 1943, Hollandia in April 1944, Morotai in September 1944, the Leyte landings in November 1944, and the Mindoro landing in December 1944. She earned six battle stars and the Navy Unit Commendation.
21 December 1944
DANFS says she was lost in an enemy aircraft attack on 21 December 1944, off Mindoro. She was struck from the Navy list on 19 January 1945.
Samuel J. Cox, in H-Gram 040, says kamikaze hit LST-460 and LST-749 that day. Both were lost, along with 107 soldiers and sailors of the 774 aboard the two ships. That count is for both hulls together. The Liberty ship Juan de Fuca was also hit and continued. H-Gram then says that at dusk, after the remaining twelve LSTs had unloaded at Mindoro and started back toward Leyte, four kamikaze attacked. That dusk sentence is a later attack. It is not a second account of these two ships.
The Navy chronology for 21 December lists LST-460 and LST-749 sunk by suicide planes in the Mindoro area, at 11°13' N, 121°04' E. That is the chronology's place for the action. It is not a surveyed wreck.
Young (DD-580) names LST-479 in that afternoon's attack, with LST-460 and Juan de Fuca, and puts the hits at roughly 17:18. H-Gram 040 and the chronology name LST-749. Those sentences are left as they stand.
