Loss of Unyo

About 220 miles southeast of Hong Kong

USS Barb found convoy HI-74 after it left Seletar. Just after midnight on 17 September 1944 she put two torpedoes into the escort carrier Unyo, one in the steering compartment and one in the engine room. Those two hits killed twenty-six men. Unyo went dead in the water. For a time she looked as if she could be saved. The sea then collapsed the shored bulkheads. She was abandoned about 0730 and sank by the stern at 0755, near 19°10'N, 116°35'E. Her captain went down with her. The escorts took off hundreds of men. She was struck on 10 November 1944.

One ship.

Created for this encyclopedia, not a scanned historical map. Base map: Natural Earth, public domain; the coast is generalized. North is up. Not a surveyed track. The pin is where Unyo sank by the stern at 0755 on 17 September 1944, 19°10' N, 116°35' E, by the Japanese ship history on combinedfleet.com. A radio notice at 0805 gives 19°08' N, 116°36' E, about two miles away. USS Barb's torpedoes hit her at 0037, so the pin is where she sank and not where she was hit.
