Rear Admiral Clifton Sprague had Taffy 3 on the morning of 25 October 1944, off Samar. His flag was in the escort carrier Fanshaw Bay.
Under his flag that morning were six escort carriers, three destroyers, and four destroyer escorts. The Japanese center force came out of the squall to the north: four battleships, six heavy cruisers, two light cruisers, and eleven destroyers. Fanshaw Bay was hit and was not sunk. Gambier Bay, Hoel, Johnston, and Samuel B. Roberts were sunk by the Japanese guns. The ships that hit them are not pinned down.
