- USS Rail (AM-26) Lieutenant (junior grade), 5 November 1943 – September 1944
Herbert Kincaid Smith, a lieutenant (junior grade), commanded Rail from 5 November 1943 until September 1944. NavSource prints the end as the month only. The next officer, Theodore Paul Pierce, also begins in September 1944, with no day. He is not Harold Page Smith, Harold P. Smith, or any other Smith already distinguished by a full name in other records. Only the Rail line identifies him.
Birth, home, and family were not found.
No academy class and no earlier ship are on the line. He relieved Lieutenant (junior grade) Leslie Charles Oaks.
Early in January 1944 Rail took a tow to the New Hebrides, spent the second half of the month on a passage to New Zealand and back, and in February resumed towing out of Espiritu Santo. On 1 June, already reclassified ATO-139 with effect from 15 May, she left for New Guinea and reached Milne Bay on the 4th. Through the summer she worked that coast from Milne Bay to Biak. If his tour ran through September, as the month NavSource prints, the October visit to Cairns falls after him or on the edge of the relief, and it is not assigned to him here. The Lingayen Gulf operation of January 1945 was under a later captain.
No later command or date of death was found.
