- IJN Hatsuyuki Captain from 20 August 1941
Lieutenant Commander Junnari Kamiura took command of the Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer Hatsuyuki on 20 August 1941, arriving from the destroyer Hokaze. Hatsuyuki, whose name means first snow, was an early Fubuki-class destroyer built at the Maizuru Naval Arsenal and completed in March 1929. Under Kamiura she served in Destroyer Division 11 with Shirayuki and Fubuki, part of Destroyer Squadron 3 in the First Fleet. Zenji Ichimon had commanded the same destroyer in the second half of 1938.
Hatsuyuki was the division flagship. Captain Kiichiro Shoji, commander of Destroyer Division 11, embarked with his staff, and Kamiura remained the ship's commanding officer. From 20 to 26 November 1941 the division left Kure and steamed to Samah on Hainan, the assembly port for the opening campaign in Southeast Asia.
From 4 December 1941 through 30 January 1942, Hatsuyuki and the rest of the division screened the heavy cruisers Kumano, Suzuya, Mogami, and Mikuma out of Samah and Cam Ranh Bay. That cruiser force covered the landings in Malaya, British Borneo, and the Anambas Islands. Between those distant-cover sorties the destroyers also spent short periods with troop convoys.
In the middle of February 1942 the division sailed with the Bangka and Palembang invasion force. During that week it joined attacks on Allied ships trying to clear Singapore and helped sink or capture at least two of them. Late in the month Hatsuyuki moved with the Western Java invasion force. On the night of 28 February to 1 March, in the Battle of Sunda Strait, Destroyer Division 11 assisted in the sinking of the Australian cruiser Perth and the American heavy cruiser Houston. On 12 March the destroyer escorted Vice Admiral Jisaburo Ozawa's covering force for the landings in northern Sumatra. On 23 March she escorted the same force for the seizure of the Andaman Islands, then patrolled and escorted from Port Blair while Japanese ships raided into the Indian Ocean.
The division left Singapore in mid-April, called at Cam Ranh Bay, and reached Kure on 22 April for docking and upkeep. On 12 May 1942 Kamiura left Hatsuyuki to take command of the destroyer Sawakaze. Tatsuya Yamaguchi relieved him that day. The ship's later fighting around Guadalcanal, and her loss to air attack off Buin on 17 July 1943, came under the officers who followed Kamiura.
