- USS Perch (SS-176) In command on the patrol that ended 3 March 1942
Lieutenant Commander David A. Hurt had Perch on the patrol that ended her. This is SS-176, not a later boat of the same name. On the night of 1 March 1942, about thirty miles northwest of Surabaya, Amatsukaze and Hatsukaze found her on the surface. Hurt was setting up a shot when one destroyer turned straight at him. He ordered her deep. They left her on the bottom and did not sink her.
Before sunrise on 3 March she could not dive. Destroyers came in sight and opened fire. Ushio and Sazanami are named for that morning, and Ushio is the one said to have fired. The Navy's loss report, written from the crew, says three destroyers opened fire and names none of them. Hurt ordered the crew off and the boat scuttled. She went down with her colors flying. All 59 got off. Ushio took them. Six died later as prisoners. Fifty-three came home.
