Commander George Hand Sharp of the United States Navy commanded the destroyer Hunt (DD-674) from 6 November 1959 until 3 May 1960. Those months fell in the ship's second commission, when she belonged to the Atlantic Fleet and made her home port at Newport, Rhode Island.

Hunt was a Fletcher-class destroyer, built at the Federal yard in Kearny, New Jersey. She was launched on 1 August 1943 and commissioned on 22 September 1943. The name honored William Henry Hunt of Charleston, who had been Secretary of the Navy under President Garfield. In 1944 and 1945 she screened fast carriers through the Central Pacific, from the Marshalls and the Marianas on to the Philippines, and she served off Okinawa in the last months of the war. The ship received nine battle stars and a Philippine Unit Citation. On 15 December 1945 she was decommissioned at San Diego.

Frank Paull Mitchell, Jr. was her first commanding officer. William Kittridge Rogers relieved him for ten days in December 1943, and Halford A. Knoertzer then had the ship until 31 March 1945, through the hardest stretch of the Pacific campaign. Fred Earle McEntire Jr. commanded her for the voyage home and the decommissioning. She stayed in reserve until 31 October 1951, when she recommissioned at San Diego under Lynn F. Barry and soon shifted to Newport.

Out of Newport she spent the 1950s on antisubmarine work, plane-guard duty with carriers, and gunnery practice, with cruises into the Caribbean. In 1954, under Robert Hoitt Alexander, she went out to the western Pacific and came home by Hong Kong, Singapore, the Suez Canal, and Naples. In August 1958 Robert Kent Rosemont took her from San Juan to reinforce the Sixth Fleet alongside the carrier Saratoga while Marines were ashore in Lebanon. She won the battle efficiency award for fiscal 1958 and again for fiscal 1959. Rosemont left on 9 October 1959, and Stanley Leon Segal held the ship for the four weeks before Sharp arrived.

Sharp took command of Hunt on 6 November 1959. For the six months he had her, she remained with the Newport destroyers in the regular work of an Atlantic Fleet tour. On 3 May 1960 he was relieved by Frank Benjamin Guest Jr., who stayed into 1962 and later became a rear admiral. Hunt was decommissioned on 30 December 1963 and berthed with the Atlantic Reserve Fleet at Philadelphia. She was stricken on 1 December 1974 and sold for scrap on 14 August 1975.
