Ensign R. L. Richards, of the Naval Reserve, had PT-123 on the night of 14 January 1943. Lightning showed him a ship between Savo and Cape Esperance. His first torpedo missed. He fired three more at 500 yards and reported a hit aft of amidships. Japanese records of that night show no damage.

On 1 February 1943 he had her again, about three miles south of Savo, astern of PT-124. Clark W. Faulkner in that boat fired three torpedoes at Makigumo. They missed. Richards was about to fire at a second ship when a floatplane dropped a bomb on the fantail of PT-123. She burned. The crew went into the water. One enlisted man was killed, three were missing, and three were badly hurt. The sinking of Makigumo is not this boat's. Yugumo scuttled that destroyer after a mine.
