Commander Frederick Moosbrugger had the six American destroyers at Vella Gulf on 6 August 1943. Dunlap was the lead ship of his division, with Craven and Maury, and Lang, Sterett, and Stack were with them.
They closed by radar and fired twenty-four torpedoes in a minute. Three Japanese destroyers, Hagikaze, Arashi, and Kawakaze, were sunk. Shigure got away after a torpedo passed through her rudder and did not explode. No one American destroyer is named for that shot.
