Lieutenant Joshua J. Nix had Edsall on 1 March 1942. She was a Clemson-class four-piper. After putting Langley survivors aboard the oiler Pecos, she was caught alone, about 200 miles south-southeast of Christmas Island.
The battleships Hiei and Kirishima and the heavy cruisers Tone and Chikuma fired more than a thousand shells. Nix fired her torpedoes. One narrowly missed Chikuma. Dive bombers from Kaga, Hiryu, and Soryu stopped her. She went down by the stern. Chikuma picked up a handful of survivors. Their names are not known.
