Clemson-class four-piper of the Asiatic Fleet, launched 29 July 1920 at William Cramp and Sons in Philadelphia and commissioned 26 November 1920 under Commander A. H. Rice. On 20 January 1942, with the corvettes Deloraine, Katoomba, and Lithgow, she was credited with sinking the submarine I-124 off Darwin. The kill is not pinned to one of the four ships. On 1 March, Lieutenant Joshua J. Nix in command, after putting Langley survivors aboard the oiler Pecos, she was caught alone by battleships Hiei and Kirishima and heavy cruisers Tone and Chikuma. She dodged more than a thousand shells, nearly hit Chikuma with a torpedo, and was finally stopped by dive bombers from Kaga, Hiryu, and Soryu. She went down by the stern.
