Commander Bernard L. Austin had the rear destroyers at Empress Augusta Bay on 2 November 1943: Spence, Thatcher, Converse, and Foote.
The usual account is that a torpedo from Sendai's spread wrecked Foote. She was not sunk. Spence was hit below the waterline and was not sunk. Spence and Thatcher were among the destroyers that finished Hatsukaze. That sinking is not credited to one of them.
