Photos and infoFletcher-class destroyer. At Kula Gulf on 6 July 1943 she led the American column, with O'Bannon beside her and the cruisers astern. Helena was sunk in that fight. Nicholas and Radford then stayed behind. Nicholas took 291 of Helena's men aboard. The two destroyers together got more than 700 off, breaking off three times to fight. Before dawn she traded shots with Amagiri. The torpedoes missed. She also led Captain Ryan's division off Horaniu, where the torpedoes traded with Shigure all missed. On 2 September 1945 she ferried Allied representatives from Yokohama out to Missouri. The signing was on the battleship.
